Welcome, Ka¯hu ki Rotorua
Hi everyone, I hope you have all had a great week! The week is finally here where we are launching our new bilingual news section — Ka¯ hu ki Rotorua. This section featuring news articles with versions in te reo and English is an exciting and important milestone for the newspaper, and I'm excited to be helping contribute to Rotorua advancing as a bilingual city. New Zealand on Air, through the Public Interest Journalism Fund, will give $440,000 over two years for a four-page weekly section, and I'm really looking forward to having it in the Rotorua Weekender pages starting this week. It sounds like a lot of people have been keen to be a part of it and I'm sure senior journalist of Te Arawa, Roimata Mihinui, will produce great stories to share. Check it out on pages 17-20! It's also exciting to be able to share more of this year's Rotorua Young Achievers in this week's edition. Once again, after reading through their full bios on the Rotorua Trust's Facebook page, it's crazy how they have enough time in the week to do everything! Check out the next round of amazing youth and photos by Andrew Warner on page 16. It's been great to catch up with twins India and Alicia Heron after their “Big Shave”. You may remember the story in the Rotorua Weekender recently about how these teenagers were shaving their hair to raise funds and awareness for Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis. Well, the hair is now gone and the girls have raised an awesome amount of money. Read more on the next page. There are some great events coming up, though of course things have to adhere to the alert level restrictions. Those who love theatre and music will have plenty to check out in the coming weeks with a Lakes Performing Arts Centre show and Rotorua Little Theatre's latest production. You can find out more information about these in this week's edition. Also, don't forget to get among the action with the Rotorua Pink Walk next week! Check out page 6 for more info. Keep those thumbs ups and downs and reader's photos rolling in!
